Camino Ingles Documentary: From Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela

In 2012, I walked the 500-mile Camino Francés alone, a life-changing journey that sparked my love for all things Camino de Santiago. Four years later, I returned with my wife and our toddler, pushing and carrying him along the Camino Portugués as a young family. And in 2022, the three of us returned once again, this time walking the Camino Inglés together.

It took some time to edit this video, but better late than never!

This 8-day pilgrimage from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela was our most personal and rewarding Camino yet. In this video, we share our complete day-by-day adventure across 114 kilometers of coastal beauty, forests, and Galician villages, all through the lens of two parents and their child discovering the world together, one step at a time.

If you’re dreaming of walking the Camino de Santiago, planning a Camino Inglés route, or wondering whether the Camino is possible with young children—this story is for you.

Why We Chose the Camino Inglés

The Camino Inglés (or English Way) is one of the lesser-known Camino de Santiago routes, traditionally taken by pilgrims arriving by boat from the British Isles. At just over 100 km from Ferrol, it’s the shortest route that qualifies for the Compostela certificate, making it ideal for families and first-time pilgrims alike.

We picked it for several reasons:

  • Length: At just 114 kilometers, it was a realistic distance for a 5-year-old walking most of the way.

  • Varied Scenery: From beach towns and quiet countryside to historic cities like Betanzos and Santiago, it’s a visually engaging route.

  • Less Crowded: Compared to the Camino Francés, the Inglés offers more solitude and serenity—perfect for reflection and focused time together.

Why This Camino Meant So Much

Each Camino has its own soul. The Camino Francés was my solo adventure. The Camino Portugués was my first Camino as a parent. But this Camino Inglés was the Camino where I truly shared the experience with my child, step by step.

He’ll grow up, of course, and the details may fade. But I hope he carries the memory of this journey in his heart: the rhythm of walking, the joy of simplicity, the wonder of discovery.

And maybe one day, he’ll walk another Camino with me (or on his own…or with his child). That’s the power of pilgrimage. It plants seeds that bloom in unexpected ways.
